for four years the audience watched dean and sam lose loved ones and learn about the existence of angels, heaven, and hell. dean got to visit hell at the end of the third season, and in this episode, both he and sam (and the audience by extension) got to visit heaven, thereby learning what the shows version of that great unknown looked like. and quite frankly, it looked pretty glorious. dean and sam relived their greatest hits aka best memories from childhood and visited with old friends like ash and pamela, each of whom was spending their eternity in a replica of a place that had great meaning for them when they were alive. after focusing so much on chasing the worst things in the world, it was a welcome reprieve to see the boys experience some happier moments, even if they didnt necessarily agree on which moments were happiest. but what else set this episode apart was how it dealt with god, aka what could have been the magic button to solve all of the shows problems. he was nowhere to be found, not even in heaven, and another angel, joshua, told them they should give up looking because he wouldnt solve anything. this solidified that the show was not going to take the easy way out and that the winchesters really were going to have to score for team free will and save the world on their own. literally.
