Eli Cohen was born on December 6, 1924 in Alexandria, Egypt, to Shaul and Sophia Cohen. Eli studied in the city Jewish high school, and then was accepted to study engineering at the University of Alexandria. In 1944, Eli joined the Zionist movement and in 1957 he immigrated to Israel and lived in Bat Yam. On August 31, 1959, he married Nadia, an immigrant from Iraq. In May 1960, Cohen was drafted into the operational unit of intelligence in the Israeli army and was trained as a spy. In 1961 he was sent to Argentina. There he built himself an image of an Arab merchant. Cohen joined the local Arab community and became friends with some of the most eminent members of the Syrian community in Argentina. In January 1962, Cohen moved to Damascus in the guise of a Syrian who returned to his homeland many years later. He rented an apartment next to the Syrian General Staff to monitor its activities. Cohen built himself an image of a generous businessman who is loyal to his homeland, and befriended military people and senior people of the Syrian leadership. With these connections, he collected a great deal of information about the Syrian army, the Syrian leadership, and its connections to the Palestinian terrorist organizations. Every six months he went on a business trip, which allowed him to come to Israel to provide the information he collected to his operators, and to visit his family. Eli Cohen's actions prevented the deaths of many Israeli soldiers, and the information he gave to Israel led to the victory of the Six-Day War. On January 7, 1965, Cohen was caught in his house by the Syrian army while he was in bed listening to radio broadcasts. Cohen was tortured severely during his interrogation. On May 18, 1965 he was executed by hanging and buried in Damascus.
